Chapter 11

An hour later, Dani was still thinking about Cynthia’s advice to steer clear of Sophie when there was the sound of a text message and then the sound of an incoming call tearing through the silence.

Dani checked the screen and stiffened when she saw Nadine’s number again. She didn’t pick up. When it was quiet, she read the text. All it said was:

Call Me!

She started to tap out a reply but then reconsidered and pushed the call-back button instead. As she was waiting for Nadine to pick up, she realized that there was now an ocean between them, and she envisioned the vast expanse of water separating them. And that wasn’t even the biggest thing that separated them.

“Oh God, Dani,” Nadine’s voice whispered in her ear. “I’m so glad you’re calling back. Hang on while I go outside, okay? I’m standing in the hallway outside the conference room right now. I was in a meeting, but I don’t care, I just told them I had to take this call.”

“Why did you call me when you were in a meeting in the first place?” There was the sound of doors opening and closing, then a siren screaming in the background.

“I’m out back now,” Nadine said loudly. “Where are you, Elle?”

Elle? Dani cringed. Elle was what Grace used to call her. Hearing it now, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“I mean, I was at your apartment twice, and I was beginning to get seriously worried. Did you know the hydrangea out in the hall has completely withered?”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Mrs. Barr was supposed to water it.” Dani waved her arm about as if shooing away a fly, suddenly irritated by Nadine’s tone—she sounded as if they had said goodbye with a loving kiss only last night, as if their horrible breakup drama had never happened. “But could you get to the point?”

“I told you, I was worried. Where the hell are you?”

“Well, Nadine, the thing is—and hold on to your horses here—I’m in Northern Ireland right now to attend Jane’s wedding.”

No response.

“Jane? My sister?”

“I know who Jane is, Dani.” The familiar snarl. “But why is she—never mind.”

Dani just waited, refusing to ask again why Nadine was calling her.

“The thing is, I would give literally anything to be with you right now.”

“Why?”

“I totally get that you’re—you know—that there’s a little negativity there. What can I say? I mean, I’ve made a horrible mistake, obviously, and I do take full responsibility. But that being said, you have to understand that the kind of pain I suffered when I lost my mom makes people do crazy things. I mean, I did wrong by you; I won’t deny that.” She paused. “But I was hoping that you could find it in your heart to forgive me. Under the circumstances.”

Dani pictured her—the tilted head, the pouted lips. Nadine never shied away from apologizing in some dramatic way if she thought she could get something out of it.

“You hurt me, Nadine. You humiliated me.
